There are two aluminium smelters in the Hunter. The smaller and older of the two is Hydro Aluminium smelter at Kurri Kurri. Tomago Alumnium is the other and is one of the major export earners in the Region.
Both smelters imports alumina and petroleum coke, manufacturing high quality aluminium for export throughout the world.
The location of the Tomago facility was chosen because of the proximity to reliable power supplies and port facilities.
