Hunter Medical Research Institute

Newcastle Port Corporation helps with importing and exporting through the Hunter region. By helping the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), the Corporation also help prevent the export of local health and medical research talent.

Called the brain drain, many highly skilled and experienced researchers leave regional areas to pursue the careers in larger cities. HMRI is reversing this trend in the Hunter Region, and the Newcastle Port Corporation helps to fund this work.

HMRI is a unique partnership between Hunter New England Health, the University of Newcastle and the community, and provides a strong voice for health and medical research in the Hunter.

HMRI provides valuable grant funding to researchers and this seed funding is a catalyst for further government and industry funding.

The Institute is an active participant in the research sector and in the promotion of a bio-technology industry. A successful research sector provides a variety of long term job prospects for people in the region, broadening the industrial/professional profile and ensuring a future that has a diverse economic base.

Newcastle Port Corporation has been a member of HMRIs Top 200 program since HMRI began in 1998.
