Maintenance Projects
The Corporation's Projects Team conducts maintenance projects to ensure the port's long term viability. The maintenance projects currently in progress include: - Gun EmplacementNewcastle Port Corporation is undertaking a $200,000 heritage maintenance project on the Nobbys Gun Emplacement. Located below Nobbys headland near the entrance to Newcastle harbour, the structure comprises a four-storey concrete observation tower and was part of Newcastles defence system during World War II when it housed two six-pounder quick firing guns as a defence against torpedo boats. The gun emplacement is subject to harsh coastal conditions because of its location and the maintenance project is aimed at arresting deterioration of the concrete structure. The building is included on Newcastle Port Corporations heritage asset listing and the work involves returning the external appearance of the structure to reflect its original appearance. The project involves: - Removal of deteriorated loose concrete - Cleaning and treatment of rusted steel reinforcement bars - Replacement of reinforcement bars where necessary - Use of specialist repair mortar - Colour matching to minimise differentiation between repaired areas and existing concrete areas - Application of graffiti coating system The main program commenced in August and is expected to be completed in November. The gun emplacement is beside the popular walking route along Macquarie Pier connecting the southern breakwater and pedestrians are requested to take caution in the area. |
