As a member of the local community, Newcastle Port Corporation supports various causes through sponsorships.

Support is offered across a range of projects which can be environmental, educational, research, business and even port welfare. A number of sponsorships are detailed under Environment and Community.

National Maritime Festival

Newcastle Port Corporation has been a long term sponsor of the National Maritime Festival which allows members to participate in a number of activities around the harbour.

The next Maritime Festival is schedule for Australia Day 2011 (Wednesday, 26 January) and as a sponsor of the event the Corporation offers free tours of the working port aboard a chartered vessel.

As well as being proud advocates for Newcastle's maritime history, Newcastle Port Corporation is also very keen to encourage people from the region and beyond to visit the working port of Newcastle and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

One way that we can achieve both of these aims is to support the Newcastle Region Maritime Museum which opened its refurbished premises on Lee Wharf (Honeysuckle) in late 2008.

The Maritime Museum organises the National Maritime Festival as one of its major activities.

Sponsoring Export Excellence

Newcastle Port Corporation congratulates the Hunter and Central Coast region's leading export and business companies for their outstanding achievements in the past year.

To assist in this recognition, Newcastle Port Corporation proudly sponsors "Newcastle Port Corporation Exporter of the Year" award.

Conservation Volunteers Australia

The battle to remove invasive bitou bush along Nobbys Beach is to be stepped up thanks to a conservation program sponsored by Newcastle Port Corporation.

A $22,000 sponsorship for the Hunter Branch of Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) is allowing the project to be carried out in four separate phases during 2010 and 2011. It links with work already undertaken by Nobbys Dunecare Group and that planned by Newcastle City Council in its Coastcare program.

Groups of CVA Better Earth volunteers will remove bitou bush along Nobbys Beach and then regenerate the areas by planting native species.

Clean Coal Research

Newcastle Port Corporation is sponsoring a $200,000 research project into clean coal technology at the University of Newcastle.

The Corporation is providing $50,000 for four years (2007 to 2010) for combustion technology research known as Chemical Looping Combustion. The Corporation recognises that coal plays a key role in our local and national economy and the aim of the sponsorship is to assist researchers through the partnership to find a cleaner way of burning coal.

The research project will be conducted at the University's recently announced Priority Research Centre for Energy.
